Inventory

Inventory is where you connect the Proxmox estate this controller manages and see everything it can reach.

Adding a node

Use Add Proxmox Node and choose how Asternodis authenticates:

  • SSH: Asternodis logs in and provisions its own API token (a dedicated token, created with privsep=0, so it inherits the user’s privileges; see Connect your nodes for what that grants) automatically. Fastest, and nothing to create by hand in Proxmox.
  • API token: paste an existing user@realm!tokenname and secret.

Full details in Connect your Proxmox nodes.

What you see

For each connected remote, Inventory lists:

  • Nodes in the cluster, with live CPU and RAM utilization;
  • Guests (VMs and containers), their status, and which node they’re on;
  • Storage available on each node; storages that hold backups (PBS, or a directory / NFS / CIFS store with backup content) carry a backups tag. Those are the ones Asternodis can restore from.

Guest agent status

For every protected VM, Asternodis surfaces whether the QEMU guest agent is present and responding (the badge on the guest’s row and detail page on the Replication page). That matters for recovery quality: with the agent, Asternodis can quiesce the guest for application-consistent recovery points; without it, points are crash-consistent (still recoverable, just not filesystem-quiesced). Inventory itself lists guests by type, node and power state. A probe cut short by contention shows as checking, never as “no agent”.

Install guest agent on a guest’s page installs it into the live guest at its home site: a brief restart, or a live install over SSH with no downtime.

Containers don’t run the guest agent. For them Asternodis takes an application-consistent point a different way: by briefly pausing the container on its node with the cgroup freezer around the snapshot, so containers get the same consistency guarantee with no in-guest software. Both are on by default, with a per-guest opt-out.

Managing remotes

You can test connectivity to a remote at any time and remove one you no longer manage. Connection errors are shown inline so you can fix credentials or reachability quickly.
